GBB was hired to help Potomac Landfill, Inc. (PLI) evaluate the setup of an initial C&D processing/recycling system at their 3,000 – 3,500 cubic-yard/day C&D landfill in Dumfries, VA.  The Potomac Landfill opened in late 1984, with the owner purchasing the PLI site in 1985.  The overall site consists of an estimated 120 acres, with 40 acres used for landfilling over the past 20 years.  The landfill has a total gross area available for landfilling of 3 million cubic yards with a peak final grade elevation of approximately 200 feet above sea level.

GBB assisted with locating the selected C&D processing/recovery equipment and monitoring systems performance.  The initial baseline equipment included a trommel screen, sorting station and baler.  GBB developed detailed economic spreadsheets of the entire landfill system costs with emphasis on the required tipping fees at the PLI landfill and their small transfer station.  Since the landfill was nearing capacity, trying to develop a C&D recycling system to extend landfill life was important, otherwise, the site would have to be converted to a C&D transfer station since PLI also owns a major roll-off boxes collection company using this landfill.  GBB staff reviewed the composition of the incoming waste, materials handling labor and equipment used on the tipping floor and sorting labor requirements.
