Title: Senior Consultant – Building Design & Construction Waste/Circular Materials Management

Reports to: Vice President or other designated manager

Location: This is a position for work to be performed from either:

  • A home office anywhere in the United States
    or
  • GBB’s headquarters in McLean, VA, in the Washington, DC metropolitan area

Note that GBB staff are currently primarily working virtually, from home offices, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is unknown when we will resume working at our headquarters again.

Position Overview:

GBB is seeking an experienced Senior Consultant to assist with an ambitious goal of achieving zero construction and demolition waste on a variety of building projects. The Senior Consultant will carry out and execute work from Project Managers as directed, will serve as a task manager on major components of large or complex projects, or as a project manager of smaller or less complex projects, under the direction of a project manager and/or project director. The successful candidate will possess a positive attitude, be a self-starter, be comfortable with working independently and in diverse teams, be technically proficient in math skills such as algebra and geometry, have excellent problem solving/analysis skills, and have superior oral and written communication skills. The candidate must have the ability to investigate, research, perform analysis and contribute to development of solutions and recommendations under direction and guidance and engage as a team player. Be willing to take direction and work with Senior Management, Project Management, and other Consulting Staff to develop work product deliverables, prepare proposals and execute marketing functions.

Functional Responsibilities: 

  • Write professional and technical reports, memoranda, and analyses using Microsoft Word.
  • Create Microsoft Excel workbooks to conduct analysis and manage internal and external project team progress.
  • Perform and manage project work assignments and marketing activities, as directed by Project Manager (PM) or supervisor.
  • Inform PM as to progress of work and discusses with PM any difficulties in accomplishing assignments and its impact on hours assigned and projected time frame.
  • Refer client feedback to PM; and report needs, problems, or issues raised by client or other outside parties to PM.
  • Notify PM of any scheduling problems with publications or deliverables.
  • Achieve direct labor utilization target and report to supervisor any problems in meeting utilization, project priority conflicts, or other related issues as soon as he/she becomes aware of them.
  • Participate in professional development activities to increase knowledge and skills.

Qualifications:

  • Education:
    4-year Bachelor’s degree in Science, Engineering, Environmental Studies/Sustainability, Construction Management, Architecture/Design, Planning, or other related field from an accredited U.S. College, University, or equivalent international institution. Solid waste and/or materials management training or related field a plus. Graduate Degree in related field is desirable.
  • Experience:
    Five or more years of progressively responsible solid waste/environmental, science, engineering, construction management, design/architecture, or sustainability (with a focus on the built environment) experience.
  • Relevant Skills:
    • Ability to read, understand, and interpret construction drawings without assistance for architecture/interiors, mechanical/electrical/plumbing, telecommunications, audio/visual, and security systems disciplines required.
    • Experience on building construction sites and with construction management preferred.
    • Strong knowledge of sustainability principles and practice required; familiarity with circular economy principles and sustainable materials management practices desired.
    • Familiarity with construction and demolition materials waste management and diversion practices required.
    • Familiarity with green building standards, including LEED, the Living Building Challenge, BREEAM, etc.
    • Familiarity with greenhouse gas accounting frameworks; experience conducting greenhouse gas accounting/analysis a plus.
    • Previous experience with GIS preferred.
    • Ability to analyze, interpret, and/or conduct material life cycle analyses.
    • Familiarity with construction and demolition materials recycling methods and technologies/facilities a plus.
    • Must demonstrate superior written and oral communication skills necessary to perform assignments.
    • Excellent time management skills and ability to juggle multiple assignments simultaneously.
    • Preferable that applicant has demonstrated research and writing skills for one or more published papers.
    • Strategic Planning experience desirable.

Other Requirements:

  • Comply with GBB’s policies and procedures, including submission of administrative reports, timesheets, and other company-required documents and forms on a timely basis.
  • Travel, as needed, to perform assignments.
  • Work off-site at client locations, as needed, to perform assignments.
  • Able to work remotely with access to internet.
